Remove snow from the area. I find 16 feet across and 50 feet long is a good size.

I use this Milwaukee battery powered water transfer pump (https://amzn.to/3WBfrll) to pump water from the lake below the ice onto the ice surface. You will need a way to get through the ice. I use my ice fishing auger but you can buy a manual one cheaper. (https://amzn.to/3PRWSFT)
